More About Me – Piano Tuner Bern
Kurt Wieland – piano tuner Bern and private teacher
The piano has been part of my life since my youth — and at some point I became curious why certain instruments sounded as if they had had a rather long night. So I began tuning them. Much of what I learned was self‑taught, later refined during a placement in a piano workshop in Bern, where I discovered that patience is just as essential as a tuning hammer.
I have been working as a piano tuner Bern and throughout the wider Bern–Fribourg–Biel region since 1990. Over the years, I’ve tuned instruments in concert halls, studios, theatres, hotels and private homes — each piano with its own personality, from the shy and whispery to the proudly outspoken.
I grew up in Bern and Murten and studied linguistics, musicology and education at the University of Fribourg (1985–1989). Alongside my studies, I received a broad piano education in classical music, jazz and popular music. This mix helps: understanding Bach, Bill Evans and Elton John gives you three very different ways of listening to a piano.
My professional references include tuning for jazz pianist Michel Camilo and for music producer Timo Loosli (Faux Tales). Whether on stage or in the studio, each experience has shaped the way I approach an instrument: with precision, curiosity and a good sense of what a piano might be trying to tell me.
In addition to my work as a piano tuner Bern, I also offer private lessons in piano and languages — for anyone who wants to make musical progress, sharpen their ear, or simply ensure their English doesn’t sound more out of tune than their piano.
Piano Lessons in Bern (Länggasse)
Alongside professional piano tuning, I also offer personal piano lessons in Bern’s Länggasse district. My teaching is calm, clear and tailored to each student — ideal for beginners who want a structured introduction, as well as advanced players looking to refine technique, musical expression or repertoire.
With experience both as a piano tuner and pianist, I combine technical understanding of the instrument with musical practice. This creates lessons that are precise, supportive and musically inspiring.

Piano Care Tips – From Your Piano Tuner Bern
Room Climate
Keep humidity stable between 40–60%. Avoid strong fluctuations, as the wood and action react sensitively to rapid changes.
Regular Cleaning
Remove dust with a soft, dry cloth.
Do not use liquid cleaners on keys or lacquered surfaces.
Key Care & Surface Protection
Wipe gently.
If keys show yellowing or matte spots, professional advice is recommended.
Tuning Rhythm
Have your piano tuned at least once a year. After moving or for new instruments: tuning immediately is recommended.
Repairs
Buzzing noises, loose strings or uneven touch response indicate that maintenance is needed.
I am happy to examine your instrument on site.
FAQ – Piano Tuning Bern
How long does a standard piano tuning take?
A typical tuning takes 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on how far the piano has drifted and whether small maintenance tasks arise (e.g., pedal adjustments, freeing sticking keys).
Does a grand piano take longer to tune?
A grand piano may take about 15 minutes longer because its longer strings require larger turning angles on the tuning pins, and the tension settles more slowly.
How often should a piano be tuned?
Regular tuning keeps your piano stable and sounding at its best. As a professional piano tuner Bern, I recommend:
- Frequent players: every 6 months
- Moderate use: once per year
Standard pitch is A4 = 440 Hz. Lower instruments can be raised to standard pitch in one or two sessions if desired.
Do you tune historical or concert instruments?
Yes. I tune:
- modern pianos
- fortepianos
- grand pianos
- harpsichords
