How long does a standard piano tuning take?
Usually between 2 and 2.5 hours. The exact duration depends on how out of tune your piano is and which minor maintenance tasks arise during the inspection, such as adjusting the pedals or freeing sticking keys.
For a grand piano, tuning can take about fifteen minutes longer because of the longer strings and the greater sensitivity of the soundboard.

More about me
Kurt Wieland – piano tuner in Bern and private teacher
The piano has been part of my life since my youth — and at some point I became curious why certain instruments sounded as if they had had a rather long night. So I began tuning them. Much of what I learned was self‑taught, later refined during a placement in a piano workshop in Bern, where I discovered that patience is just as essential as a tuning hammer.
I have been working as a piano tuner in Bern and throughout the wider Bern–Fribourg–Biel region since 1990. Over the years, I’ve tuned instruments in concert halls, studios, theatres, hotels and private homes — each piano with its own personality, from the shy and whispery to the proudly outspoken.
I grew up in Bern and Murten and studied linguistics, musicology and education at the University of Fribourg (1985–1989). Alongside my studies, I received a broad piano education in classical music, jazz and popular music. This mix helps: understanding Chopin, Bill Evans and Elton John gives you three very different ways of listening to a piano.
My professional references include tuning for jazz pianist Michel Camilo and for music producer Timo Loosli (Faux Tales). Whether on stage or in the studio, each experience has shaped the way I approach an instrument: with precision, curiosity and a good sense of what a piano might be trying to tell me.
In addition to my work as a piano tuner in Bern, I also offer private lessons in piano and languages — for anyone who wants to make musical progress, sharpen their ear, or simply ensure their English doesn’t sound more out of tune than their piano.

Stable Pitch & Optimal Sound Quality
Regular tuning keeps your piano stable and sounding at its best. As a professional piano tuner in Bern, I recommend:
- for frequent players: every 6 months
- for moderate use: once per year is ideal
Standard pitch is A4 = 442 Hz, and lower instruments can be raised to standard pitch in one or two sessions if desired.
Concert Tuning & Historical Instruments
I tune not only modern pianos and grands but also harpsichords and fortepianos.
For concerts, I ensure your instrument is perfectly prepared before the performance.
Piano Lessons – Bern Länggasse
I also offer piano lessons in Bern-Länggasse.

Piano Care Tips – From Your Piano Tuner Bern
Regular tuning
Even if seldom played, a piano should be tuned once or twice a year. New or restored pianos may need tuning every 3–6 months.
Humidity & temperature
The ideal room humidity is 40–50%.
- <30% (risk of cracks in the soundboard)
- >60% (swelling of wood)
- Room temperature should stay around 20–22°C.
- Dampp-Chaser climate systems can help maintain stability.
Placement
Practical solutions
- Place the piano not directly against the window, but slightly offset to the side.
- Do not place the piano next to a radiator.
- Keep at least 20–30 cm of distance from the exterior wall.
- Avoid direct sunlight on the lid or the keys.
- If needed, use a light blind or curtain that diffuses the light without darkening the room.
This way, you get the best of both worlds: light for visibility and protection for the instrument. The piano near the window provides a clear view of the music desk and the keyboard.
A carpet or piano mat can improve acoustics and reduce vibrations.
Cleaning
- Keys: soft cloth, slightly damp, mild soap only
- Cabinet: microfiber cloth, light cleaning polish if needed
- Interior: only by a professional
Protection
Use a dust cover when the piano is not played for long periods.
Avoid food near the instrument.
Professional maintenance
Every 1–2 years, a technician should check:
- hammers
- dampers
- action parts
- pedal mechanism
If the tone becomes too bright or too dull, hammer voicing (intonation) may be required.
Grand piano care
Avoid leaving the lid open for long periods and ensure wheels are locked.
