How long does a standard piano tuning take?

A typical tuning takes 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on how far the piano has drifted and whether small maintenance tasks arise (e.g., pedal adjustments, freeing sticking keys).

A grand piano may take about 15 minutes longer due to longer strings and higher sensitivity of the soundboard.

More about me

Kurt Wieland – piano tuner Bern and private teacher

The piano has been part of my life since my youth — and at some point I became curious why certain instruments sounded as if they had had a rather long night. So I began tuning them. Much of what I learned was self‑taught, later refined during a placement in a piano workshop in Bern, where I discovered that patience is just as essential as a tuning hammer.

I have been working as a piano tuner Bern and throughout the wider Bern–Fribourg–Biel region since 1990. Over the years, I’ve tuned instruments in concert halls, studios, theatres, hotels and private homes — each piano with its own personality, from the shy and whispery to the proudly outspoken.

I grew up in Bern and Murten and studied linguistics, musicology and education at the University of Fribourg (1985–1989). Alongside my studies, I received a broad piano education in classical music, jazz and popular music. This mix helps: understanding Chopin, Bill Evans and Elton John gives you three very different ways of listening to a piano.

My professional references include tuning for jazz pianist Michel Camilo and for music producer Timo Loosli (Faux Tales). Whether on stage or in the studio, each experience has shaped the way I approach an instrument: with precision, curiosity and a good sense of what a piano might be trying to tell me.

In addition to my work as a piano tuner Bern, I also offer private lessons in piano and languages — for anyone who wants to make musical progress, sharpen their ear, or simply ensure their English doesn’t sound more out of tune than their piano.

Piano Care Tips – From Your Piano Tuner Bern

Regular tuning

Even if seldom played, a piano should be tuned once or twice a year. New or restored pianos may need tuning every 3–6 months.

Humidity & temperature

  • Ideal humidity: 40–50%
  • Below 30%: risk of cracks
  • Above 60%: swelling of wood
  • Room temperature: 20–22°C

Dampp‑Chaser systems can help.

Placement

  • Not directly against a window
  • Avoid radiators
  • Keep 20–30 cm distance from exterior walls
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • A carpet or piano mat improves acoustics

Cleaning

  • Keys: soft cloth, slightly damp
  • Cabinet: microfiber cloth
  • Interior: only by a professional

Protection

  • Use a dust cover
  • Avoid food near the instrument

Professional maintenance

Every 1–2 years: hammers, dampers, action parts, pedal mechanism.

If tone becomes too bright or dull: hammer voicing may be needed.

Grand piano care

Avoid leaving the lid open for long periods; ensure wheels are locked.
